Sakya Nunnery near Dehradun, India, has been established by H.H. Sakya Trizin in 1998 to help the many girls who fled Tibet or were born in exile and have chosen the ordained path of service for the benefit of all beings. This is currently the only Sakya Nunnery in exile. Some of the nuns come from Nepal, Bhutan and the neighbouring Himalayan region. However most of the nuns come from Tibet and have left behind family and friends. The Nunnery is their home and it is almost impossible for them to return, or even visit Tibet. Many have traveled by foot through dangerous circumstances and difficult mountain passes.

The Nunnery has over 165 nuns ranging from the age of 9 to 40. They learn Tibetan, Hindi and English, study the Buddhist scriptures and are dedicated practitioners. Pujas can be requested by you to be performed on behalf of deceased or ill people: E-mail to Nyima Dolkar (sakyanunnery_office@yahoo.com).

Currently the Nunnery is looking for additional funding for the following projects:

  • Many nuns have recently escaped from Tibet and have approached the Nunnery, however at the moment there is a shortage of accommodation and the Nunnery is unable to house them. Additional accommodation needs to be built urgently as currently these individuals are homeless and have nowhere to live.
  • The nuns would like to build a Shrine Hall, at present they have the land but not the funding for the construction.  Currently the nuns are conducting their ritual prayers in the dinning room.
  • Funding is also needed for daily expenses
Progress has been slow but steady and has relied heavily on individual donations as at the moment no regular funding from large aid agencies or any other organisations is received.  Therefore the Nunnery is constantly dependent and grateful for individual donations.

The director of the Nunnery is venerable Lama Jamyang Lekshey, a graduate of the Sakya College and also director of the Sakya Centre and Sakya Hospital in Rajpur. We are delighted that Lama Jamyang Lekshey has joined Sakya Dolma Choe Ling for a fund raising dinner on the 19th of June 2004.

A$ 1145 were raised for the Nunnery during Lama Lekshey's visit! Additional A$ 715 have been donated to support the Sakya Hospital. Thank you all for your generosity and good wishes! The Sakya Nunnery has sent an e-mail:

It will be a great help to the nuns in the Nunnery and  this was only possible with the kind support and donations from you and other individuals, and we would like to take this opportunity to say Thank You to all the members of Sakya Dolma Choe Ling. The nuns send their warm wishes and prayers.
